Why have we changed School Council into a Pupil Parliament?
School Council was originally designed as one group of children elected by their fellow pupils to represent their opinions and raise issues working with their school leaders and governors. The school council also worked hard to take forward projects on behalf of their peers, and be involved in raising money for charities.
The new Pupil Parliament is structured much like the government as it is made up of different sub-committees. Each of these committees is designed to have a specific focus on improving Benhurst Primary School.
Pupil Parliament promotes pupil leadership opportunities, enabling children to develop valuable communication, organisation and debating skills through key roles of responsibility and new experiences. This new structure is an ideal opportunity for more than sixty pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 to be actively involved in the way that the school is run. Pupil Parliament benefits the whole school, pupils and teachers because it provides opportunities for pupils to communicate their opinions as well as influence the decisions that are made on their behalf. Pupils relish the opportunity to become a greater part of school life and enjoy making their voices heard.
What are the aims of the Pupil Parliament?
- Represent all pupils and include as many people as possible.
- Take time to listen to all pupils and communicate their views.
- Feed back to pupils about what happened about their views.
- Action decisions that have been made or explain why they can’t happen.
Who can be a member of Pupil Parliament?
Anyone can apply for a position in a committee. Each member is voted for by their peers after a short presentation explaining why they should be elected.
Pupil Voice - Classes elect one pupil and their teacher selects the second to represent their fellow pupils from Year 2 to Year 6. These positions change on a termly basis to enable more children to experience the role of being Pupil Voice representative.
Eco Committee - One pupil from each class in Year 2 to 6.
Learning Environment - One pupil from each class in Year 1 to 6.
Travel Ambassadors - Four pupils from Year 6.
LIFE Ambassadors - Six pupils from Year 6 and four pupils fro Year 5 to work on projects with Frances Bardsley.
Curriculum Committee - One pupil from each class in Year 2 to 6.
Restorative Rangers Committee - Two pupils from each class in Year 3 to 6.
What do we do?
Committee members chair regular meetings with their class to discuss topics, issues and initiatives that affect them and their learning environment as well as charity events. Miss Britton regularly meets with Pupil Parliament to discuss issues raised by the class and other important areas. The committee members have different roles and responsibilities with our two Chair Persons setting the agenda and leading the meetings. Our Secretary minutes all our meetings (read our minutes on the link below) and our Treasurer is responsible for the money that we raise and spend. The committee members work together on projects with different members of staff to get the best out of every project.
What impact did the previous School Council have during 2015-2016?
- Taking responsibility to welcome visitors to our classes to explain the learning taking place.
- Helping to promote Core Values across the school.
- Working with Mrs Garratty in selecting designs for murals in the library.
- Trialling and evaluating different handwriting pens to improve handwriting.
- Teaching staff and children about Thinking Hats and how to use them to aid learning.
- Leading a school spellathon to improve our knowledge of key spellings.
- Raising money so that KS2 had new lockers for September 2016.
What impact did Pupil Parliament have in 2016-2017?
- Researched and tested new handwriting pens which are now used across the school.
- Looked at health and safety around the school and met with Mrs Denchfield and Mr Baines.
- Set up the Resolution Role Models.
- Investigated British Values at Benhurst and created a new web page.
- Set up and Eco Code across the school.
- Developed and evaluated the use of learning journeys in classrooms.
- Bought three sets of shared reading books for each class.
- Bought lockers for KS2.
- Christmas Shoebox Appeal 2016
- Children in Need 2016 (dressing in pyjamas and a cake sale)
- Comic Relief 2017
- Sponsored Spellathon 2017
- Epilepsy Awareness Day 2017
- Sals Shoes 2017
What impact did Pupil Parliament have in 2017-2018?
- Researched, presented and funded new 3B4Me resources for each class.
- Funded the new lunchtime club resources with board games, puzzles, construction, card games and colouring items.
- Worked with Mr Denchfield to design a new school logo for the uniform tops.
- Set up LIFE Ambassadors with Frances Bardsley and The Bridge. We led our first meeting with the other schools in October and then went to Frances Bardsley in June.
- Worked with a member from the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association to collect information and plan the summer event.
- Transport for London awarded Benhurst with Gold Level Accreditation.
- Children in Need raised £687.
- Christmas performances raised £530 for Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
- Spellathon raised £1565 for classroom resources.
- Children asked for, organised and led a Cancer Research and the National Deaf Children's Society charity day seeling items that they had made, raising £1206.
- Presented our work to the Governors in March.
- Worked with Mrs McCarthy to look at internet safety and how a page for pupils could be added.
- Presented our work to our local MP Julia Lopez in April.
- Our annual spellathon raised £1564 for projects in school.
- Sporting activity day raised £314 for the Guide Dogs.
