PSHE Curriculum

Intent

At Benhurst Primary School, we recognise the importance of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education and the role it plays in developing our pupils into ambitious, compassionate and resilient individuals who are prepared for life and work. We believe every child must be provided with the opportunity to succeed and to develop personally and socially, enabling them to cope with life and live safely and happily in the modern world. We aim to prepare our children to leave Benhurst to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.
Our curriculum follows the 3D scheme of work which builds upon the children’s first stages of development in EYFS through progressive and sequenced topics, which revolve around three key themes: relationships, health and wellbeing and living in the wider world. By planning discussion-based tasks, our lessons encourage children to approach tasks with respect and compassion while many lessons allow for children to express their ideas and opinions openly and creatively.

Implementation

At Benhurst, we deliver a comprehensive PSHE curriculum through our 3D PSHE program, taught weekly across all year groups. Lessons are tailored to meet the unique needs of our pupils, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to engage and thrive.

Each classroom is equipped with worry boxes and a dedicated PSHE display that reflects the current topics being explored, fostering an environment of openness and support. Children record their work in floor books. Our lessons encourage discussion and dialogue, with teachers trained to handle sensitive topics with care and compassion, promoting an atmosphere of trust and respect.

Impact

Through effective PSHE instruction, our pupils will develop the ability to communicate their feelings clearly and appropriately. They will learn to show mutual respect and empathy towards others, engaging in discussions with an understanding of diverse perspectives. By understanding how to keep themselves safe and recognizing potential dangers in their surroundings, children will build their confidence and courage.

Our curriculum also emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle, equipping pupils with the knowledge to make informed choices for their own well-being and that of others. Children will learn what positive relationships look like and understand the significance of appropriate behaviour in fostering these connections.

By nurturing their creativity, we encourage pupils to express themselves and explore their identities. They will also develop a sense of responsibility within the school community and beyond, understanding their role as active, caring members of society. Through our 3D PSHE program, we aim to cultivate well-rounded individuals who are prepared to contribute positively to the world around them.
